This advanced level CPUX course provides you with in-depth knowledge about a key part of the human centred design process: user requirements engineering.

Our CPUX-UR course comprises two modules taught over four days. Most people choose to take both modules but if you are already proficient you can take just Module 2 – to help you decide, the full CPUX-UR curriculum is available on the UXQB website.

Please note that you must achieve CPUX foundation certification in order to take the CPUX-UR exam.

What are CPUX and CPUX-UR?

CPUX (Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience) is an international standard for qualification of individuals who are professionally involved in developing or ensuring the usability or user experience of products.

CPUX-UR (CPUX-User Requirements) is an advanced module which focuses on user requirements engineering and is an international standard for qualification of individuals who are professionally involved in developing or ensuring the usability or user experience of products.

This course is for anyone holding the foundational CPUX-F certification. This advanced level certification is appropriate for anyone who works in UX who wants to learn (1) how to gain a detailed understanding of their customers’ needs and (2) how to generate user requirements to inform design solutions. People who take this course typically work in research, design or business analysis roles.

What You Will Learn

The course is based on content from the International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB) and delivered in London.

The course provides you with detailed information user requirements engineering. The course covers:

  • Understanding and defining the context of use
    • Identifying the goals and approach for a context of use analysis
    • Differentiating between user, stakeholder and system requirements
  • Methods for gathering and documenting context of use information
    • Participant recruitment
    • Observation
    • Interviews
    • Personas
    • Scenarios
    • User group profiles
  • Systematically deriving user needs from context of use descriptions
    • Differentiate between types of user needs
    • Apply quality factors for user needs
    • Recognise user needs in context of use information
    • Formulate user needs so that enables requirements can be derived
  • Deriving, specifying, structuring and prioritising user requirements
    • Validate user requirements with users
    • Use of a structured scheme for prioritisation
    • Ranking the relevance of user requirements together with users

Certification Test

In order to gain the CPUX-UR certification, you must pass a theoretical and practical test. The theoretical part of the test consists of a 90-minute test that consists of multiple choice and essay questions. The practical element of the test consists of observing a contextual interview, documenting it in the form of an as-is scenario and deriving the user requirements based on the as-is scenario.

You must achieve 70% in both parts of the test to gain CPUX-UR certification.

What Are UXQB and CPUX?

The International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB) is a consortium of internationally recognised experts in usability and user experience. UXQB’s objective is to develop, maintain and manage the certification program (CPUX: Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience).

CPUX is an international standard for qualification of people working professionally within UX. So far professional UX-organisations in six European countries have joined UXQB: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Holland and Denmark.

Pete holds a PhD in Human Factors, which he gained from Loughborough University. He has experience of user-centred research in both academic and commercial settings and has worked on projects in a number of industry sectors (e.g. rail, pharmaceutical, FMCG) for national and global companies.
