Info & Descriptions
About GaucinGaucin is an historical Andalucian 'white village' of about 3000 people. The dazzling white-washed houses with their flower filled balconies, traditional ornamental grille windows and terracotta roofs spread out along the hillside in charming narrow streets. The village is overlooked by the magnificent remains of the 13th century Castillo d'Aguilla (floodlit on certain evenings). From the village there are spectacular views down the valley of the Genal River to the Mediterranean Sea, the rock of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of North Africa. The pace of life in Gaucin is restful and relaxing and local people are genuinely welcoming. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, and of particular interest to those who enjoy walking and bird watching. This part of Spain is often referred to as 'earthly paradise' . Eagles, falcons, buzzards, vultures, Golden oriels, finches, bee-eaters and many other rare and interesting species are frequently seen amongst the olive, cork and citrus groves. This region is on the migratory route of birds from Europe travelling to North Africa. Many traditional events take place throughout the year transforming the peaceful village into a hive of activity. The tradition of the running of the bull takes place on Easter Sunday and the Santa Nino religious procession is in September. There are a number of bars and restaurants in Gaucin all within walking distance, including the Fructuosa (2 minutes walk away) where you can dine on the terrace overlooking the valley. The English owned Casablanca Hotel welcomes non-residents to their attractive dining room (make sure you book!).
